Successful Domain Names - How To Select The Best Domain Name For Your Business

By Dhruv Patel

If you in the process of either developing your first website or starting a business that needs a web presence, knowing how to select the best domain name for your business is vital to your online success.

The reason you have a website is so customers can find you. You need to do everything possible to make it easy - there are already thousands of companies out there doing virtually the same thing you are, no matter how unique you think you might be. Whether you have an accounting firm, you sell custom designed canoes, or you are looking for part time babysitting jobs, people need a concise method to find you. And you domain name is the only way they can possible find you.

For instance, if you write programs for video games, and your company name is Fun Video Games, then your domain really should be www. FunVideoGames.com. Don't waste your time developing a site around www.johnscomputerservices.com. Anyone who finds you will be looking for something else completely. Always try to get the same URL as the name of your company.

Domain names that have no relation to your company name or reason for being in business are a waste of time, energy, and money. Most of your new customers who need your product or service are going to search using that term. If someone needs "fish tank repair services", and that's exactly what you do, then you need to have this in your URL. If you decide to buy a domain name such as www. FinsAndFishies.com you'll lose a large possible customer base because when they search for what they want, your site won't be presented.

Some people choose domain names that have nothing to do with what they do. This proves to be nothing more than a waste of time, energy and money. The website could be beautiful, but ultimately it will be useless if customers don't find it. Someone who is interested in the type of product or service you provide is going to search on that term. The first page of search results is a list of domain names including those words. If a customer wants to buy grass seed, having a domain name like www.barrysbeautifulyards.com may not help you much.

Perhaps you have your company name and URL all picked out, but now you find out that someone has already purchased the domain name you want. If you have your heart set on a particular domain name, you might not have to give up - yet. There are a few things you can do.

First, check to see if this is a real company or just someone who bought the name and is hoping to sell the domain at a profit. This is easy to find out simply by the going to the webpage and see what comes up. If the name is for sale, and you really want this one, you might want to consider negotiating a price.

Click on the link or site and see what happens. If you end up at a page that says the domain is for sale, it might be worth your while to contact the owner and see what he wants for it. It's up to you to decide if the investment is worth it, because you still have other options like getting a name that is similar, or changing the extension if that's still available.

In any case, just remember that it will be a waste of money and time and effort if you just buy any domain name that has no branding recognition for you, your service, or your company. Domains that have abbreviations or a mixture of numbers and letters that don't mean anything to possible customers, won't help you at all.
