I believe its somewhere in the 90% of the people have high speed Internet which is the first thing to consider. In case you don't know, there are a lot of companies would 'optimize' any images on their sites by making them very poor quality because they would load faster. This is unnecessary with faster Internet speeds. Just don't use big file types if you can keep from it.
This is important! People's computer screens are getting much bigger. And almost all computers see resolutions of 1024-768, and 1280-1024 is getting more well-known. The point here is, the standard size for websites used to be 800 or 780 pixels wide. You have a captive audience that came to YOUR website. You need to try a clean look; this is NOT to say you need to add more content to the bigger area. . By putting the same amount of buttons, words and images in the bigger website size, you're bound to have a clean and uncluttered website look.

Using free website templates could be the perfect starting point for you to make a beautiful web presence.
