Tips For Designing Your Own Web Site

By Julie Johnson

More and more people today are creating their own web pages. Whether you are starting an on-line business, or just want to create a page to share your personal interests or ideas, the number of web pages on the Internet continues to increase rapidly year after year. If you want your web page to be seen by as many people as possible there are several things you can do to optimize the effectiveness of your website.

The key to getting to a website, for most people, is to go through a search engine, like Yahoo or Google. When you search for a term the engine returns results based on your search criteria, and the relevance of the web pages found. If you use internal links on your web page it will provide more information for the search engine, which will help improve your position in the search results list.

As the search engine is compiling its results list, it searches the key words of web pages to see how relevant they are to the search criteria. The search engine is also looking at the links within your web page to see if they are providing even more information on the same topic. The more relevant links you have within your page, the more likely it is that your web page will end up higher in the search engine results list.

1. Make sure that the links you have are relevant to the information or services that your web site provides.

2. Link through relevant keywords and not use the infamous CLICK HERE, link that people love to use. This does not serve the same purpose as linking to relevant text.

3. Links are only effective when they actually take you to another web page, not just change colors. It is critical that you make sure all your links work, and keep working. You should also make sure that the site you are linking to hasn't changed, and is still providing the additional information it did when you first created the link.

4. Including links to other websites that can provide additional information on the topics you are discussing is great, for both your site and the users of the site. Too many links, though, can have the opposite effect, confusing your users, and driving people away from your site, so you should use links in moderation.

The key to getting users to your site is to increase your sites position in the search engine results list. When you include internal links in your web site you are providing additional information to both the search engine and your users that can help improve your site rankings.
