Choosing Wall Sconces For Your Home

By Scott Rodgers

Wall sconces are the fixtures that are there since a long time. Initially they were used to hold candles and torches along the walls of the homes. Now a days they are used as lighting fixtures to illuminate an area according to the requirement. They are available in various shapes, sizes and colors, thus giving you a lot many options to choose from.

These fixtures can be used as task lighting to perform specific tasks or can also be used to soft environment lights for illuminating the space but not very brightly. The lighting effect produced by the fixture will be determined by the type of material and style chosen.

You can also make use of wall sconces for ambient lighting for some areas. Like you can use glass or similar material shades which will diffuse light and thus can very well illuminate the areas that do not require much light. If you want bright light, you can go for halogen or xenon bulbs. This is a good option for reading purpose.

A wall sconce with metal or other solid diffusers will allow light to escape the top and/or bottom of the fixture, throwing the light source amongst the wall.

You can get all types of designs in wall sconces, from sophisticated to very simple ones. They also vary in sizes. You can get short horizontal sconces and long wall torchiere fixtures are also widely available.

To determine the right style of sconce for your home, begin by evaluating the room and the objects already in it. What material, color, or trend is predominant in your rooms decor? Do you want to enhance or highlight the decor and atmosphere of the room? Wall lights should be chosen to complement the look of other lighting in the room as well as the architecture and decorating style of the home.

Wall sconces are an ideal way to bring additional light to much needed areas throughout your home. However, if your wall has not been pre-wired to accept the wall sconce, it may be difficult to install without the help of a professional handyman or electrician. Some wall sconces may not require hard-wired installation, and offer the option of a cord and plug application.

These fixtures do not take much floor space and can beautifully illuminate an area. Just make sure to select the right style of fixtures for your home and place them correctly to get the desired effect.
