Virtual Wild West: DNS

By James G. Pynn

The pride of the Western world is the mighty Internet. No matter what the pundits at the search engine giants, like Google and Yahoo, would have you believe, there is more money out there to be made than they typically shell out for granting them advertising space on your website. It is no exaggeration that the Internet can be likened unto the Wild West. Resourceful, industrious entrepreneurs abound and succeed online.

Armed with a solid business plan, plenty of bandwidth, and an accommodating DNS provider, there is little that cannot be done online. The linchpin, of course, is a catchy name, a clever bit of branding. That is the buzzword in business these days: branding. This means to tie in the logo with the service with the colors with the T-shirts, with the business cards. A remnant of the Dot Com bubble, but it seems here to stay.

The case can be made that as with a potential real estate investment, acquiring an online presence requires a solid foundation. Online foundations are built on reliable host services. A virtual Versailles is nothing more than a set of blueprints, but with a reliable DNS provider, it can flourish into a virtual well of income. Anything less and a slow sinking off the mountainside is in order. A solid foundation cannot be overstressed.

A reputable provider should have the wherewithal to ensure all aspiring customers can access your site without have a Page Load error waiting for them. Customers want to immediately access a website. Delays in excess of 2 seconds have been proven to dissuade customers from browsing or buying. The reason is logical: if you cannot afford to have your website properly hosted, they your wares must not be worth purchasing.

Should an IP address change or be deleted, a proper DNS provider must be able to deliver the customer nonetheless. As network servers must recalibrate IP addresses to accommodate the millions of users colliding and seeking a multitude of sites, a reputable DNS provider can ensure you site is always found and accessible. Inaccessible sites are rarely re-visited, first impressions are crucial for the online business model.
