The Evolution of Logo Design

By Katt DelaCruz

In the present era the 'Custom Logo Design' is quite common words. But do you know where the word "logo" had been actually traced from? It is from the ancient Greece. It is a form of code or symbol that comprises of the initials of the name for which it has been designed. In the ancient Greek and Roman Empire they were used as monograms on the coins to symbolize the greatness of rulers and their dynasties.

Fast forward to the 13th century and logos started being adapted as trademarks in the process of trading.

During the period of the 1800's, the evolution of logo design can be traced precisely as it actually begun as a branding strategy. One man is credited for the evolution of logo design that is, Marcus Samuel, he had a business in London for a long time and after years in the business he started recording innumerable success yet he had only started the business with products ranging from oil, kerosene, and some point jewels. In no time he had established his business entity worldwide. In the year 1897 he named his business a unique name, which was Shell (yes, the same one we all know today). A diagrammatic representation symbolized the entire company and thus becoming the company "logo" or in other words its trademark.

During that same time a Financial Corporation introduced a new design that was clear to all companies. The design was known as Rock of Gibraltar. Till this very date the logo design still stands strong and it is recognized world wide as a symbol of security and dedication. All this goes to show just how much a logo passed a strongly founded message to the peoples of the 17th and all the way into the 18th century.

All in all these ideal examples are great evidence that for firm to thrive it need an excellent graphical image. This helps it to actually communicate to larger population and thus get more customers. Even though this was more practical in the past it is as well used now-a-days.

This simple concept is far more effective in today's competitive world. Now-a-days, in the market segments containing fierce competition a brand identifying logo is inevitable. A custom logo design is an incorporated part of branding strategy. Now we can find an enormous numbers of logos around us and further are entering into the market day by day. But the images of only few unique logos stay in our mind for a prolonged period of time. If a company wishes to avail an outstanding presence in the market then a good logo design can play a decisive role.

A custom logo is not only a graphical image offering professional look to a company but it should also represent the common customers. If with the help of 'logo' you can convince the customers that you are with them at each and every step, in each and every deal then they will come forward to place you on the top of the market.
