The 5 Important Rules To Observe in Website Design

By Taylor Nelson

In creating a website, one must be detailed-oriented. Small things can actually make a big difference in your site. It can actually make or break your online promotion. Hence, here are the five most important web design rules that you should observe as you create your website.

1) No for Splash Pages

Splash pages are the first pages you see when you arrive at a website. They normally have a very beautiful image with words like "welcome" or "click here to enter". In fact, they are just that -- pretty vases with no real purpose. Do not let your visitors have a reason to click on the "back" button! Give them the value of your site up front without the splash page.

2) Do not overwhelm your website with banner advertisements

Excessive banner ads can turn-off even the least net savvy users. Therefore, enrich your website with valuable content. Make most of your page space, by putting articles, journals, or tips that your readers could make use of, and just inject a few affiliate links. Readers don't want to be pushed on buying. Hence, make them feel that they want to buy.

3) Have a simple and clear navigation

Design your site that would cater for newbie Internet users. Imagine that a child would be the one to navigate on to your site. Minimize the use of multi-tiered drop down menus or flash-based tools. Make it an easy experience for your readers, so they would not have to leave your site.

4) Give clear indications of where your user is

Your site should have signage that would tell your visitors where they currently are. Allow them to easily access the home page, and other parts of your site. Confusion would only push your readers to close your site, and just find another one. To make other pages in your site accessible, you may just place links on each page.

5) As much as possible, avoid using audio

If you will be placing an audio on your site, make sure that your readers can control the volume or make it stop. Audio on loop would distract your visitors who intends to read the content your site. Hence, make the controls for yous site easily accessible.
