The Issues Of An Inexperienced Wedding Planner

By Rene A Lacape

Sandra looked at the clock and almost broke down. It was 7.30 in the morning. She felt so helpless with everything spiraling out of control ever since she offered Jo to plan for her wedding. The bride-to-be had sounded so happy that Saturday but now she was definitely going to hate her. It never crossed Sandra's mind that a wedding planner had to take care of so many big and small details. She thought she was made for it. After all, she was a very experienced corporate event manager. But at this moment, she was completely overwhelmed by a cake crisis and a never-ending list of other details. Good thing the bride's gown had arrived wait a minute! She had overlooked the additional beading for the gown's train!

She should have seen it coming. Weddings were not corporate events. They came with higher expectations and must proceed without a hitch. In other words, the pressure was intense. She swore to herself that she would be more prepared next time. What next time? She must be dreaming. Who in her right mid would want to employ her as the wedding planner after this? Even if by some miracle she managed to pull off this wedding, she was not even sure that she had the mettle to go through the same process again.

Nevertheless, there was no escape this time. The wedding date was set. Sandra proposed a range of wedding themes to the bridal couple and they had set their hearts on having a Christmas wedding. Unfortunately, they failed to consider the consequences of such an arrangement. Churches and popular venues were already booked solid for the festive season. In the end, they had to resign to the family's backyard to hold the matrimony as well as the bridal shower.

That was the least of Sandra's problems. The nightmare had just begun. Just last week, Sandra dashed to virtually every craft shop in town to get the supplies she needed for the wedding. It was not the craft shops' fault that they did not have enough supplies since it was at the height of the gift-giving season. The only thing Sandra could do was try to secure as many supplies as possible from each shop. As she was rushing in and out with both arms loaded with organza ribbons and tulle, it suddenly dawned on her she was wasting precious time playing Martha Stewart. She should have asked the professionals to be in charge but it was too late now.

Luckily, she found an online trader who was able to deliver her the rest of the supplies that she could not get. She counted her blessings. Next on the list of thing-to-do was to gather enough helping hands to put together the wedding favors. But, with the Christmas around the corner, almost every family member and close friend of the bride was extremely tied up with their own holiday plans. Sandra was near hysterical and downed dozens cups of herbal tea to soothe herself before placing more frantic phone calls. At long last, an inexperienced but willing group of volunteers appeared at her doorstep to offer assistance. However, early the next morning, Sandra was confronted with yards of wrappers, ribbons and more than a hundred potpourri pouches strewn everywhere across her living room. She had made a mistake with the choice of material and now all the contents were spilling out.

It would not be such a problem if Sandra had more time. Sadly, this was not the case. There were millions of other things screaming for her attention. Just the night before, Jo's mother phoned. After all the hassle Sandra went through, she had the nerve to tell her now that the wedding cake design the bridal couple had chosen was unsatisfactory. It was actually such a unique design that Sandra had to call up more than three different confectioners to find one who was able to do the Christmas log cum wedding cake. She had even pored over the various designs of cake toppers and chosen one that would suit the wedding concept as well as be available at this time of the year. Now, she suddenly found herself caught in the middle of a tight spot between a cake and a very hard-to-please mother-of-the-bride.

Sandra could easily fix the mess if she had time. And that was exactly what she did not have. There was still an endless list of things to take care of before the wedding. Not to mention the cake. The couple wanted a Christmas log cum wedding cake. It was a unique design and it took Sandra several phone calls in order to find the confectioner who was skilled enough to do it. Then there was the tricky matter of finding a wedding cake topper that was still available at this time of the year as well as fitting for the concept. To top it off, Jo's mother called the night before, complaining how unsuitable the design of the wedding cake was for the occasion. All of a sudden, Sandra was plunged between a very dissatisfied mother-of-the-bride and a wedding cake. Then, the bride herself called. She was a nervous wreck and in need of immediate comforting. Of all things that could go wrong, the gown rental shop had lost the set of bridal hair clips that was supposed to go with the gown. Jo had specially ordered for the clips as she loved them so much. While the shop had placed the order for a new set, it would not arrive until after the wedding! Sandra reminded herself again that she would somehow have to make the emergency trip to the accessories shop and be hopeful that it would have the designated bridal accessories she was looking for.

Fifteen minutes had passed. Today was going to be a very interesting day for Sandra, no doubt.
