As the Joomla Community has grown so has the number of free modules available for it. Users can use the script as is, or install additional components to add specific features enhancing their website.
Joomla membership sites can be created for free using a combination of these extensions.
Finding Instructions on which of these components you should use to convert Joomla into a membership site is not simple. So I have put together a short tutorial to guide you in the right direction.
To start you need to have an installation of Joomla 1.5, if your web host includes cpanel it is a simple matter of clicking the fantastico logo "smiley face" on cpanel under software / services.
On the left of the page you will see a list of applications that can be auto installed with fantastico, find Joomla 1.5 & simply follow the step by step instructions.
Next download the Account Expiration Control, Component / Module & Plugin's once downloaded & unzipped the file will include everything you need for your Joomla membership site.
Installing Account Expiration Control Component
* In Joomla Admin - Enable Legacy this is located in Extensions / Plugin Mgr
* Using Joomla Admin / Extensions / Install - Install the A.E.C component
* In Sequence upload & install the plugins - AEC Access, AEC Error, AEC Routing & AEC User
* Check that these plugins are activated after the legacy plugin move them down below legacy using the arrows in plugin manager.
* Make sure you enable all the plugins
* Open the control panel for A.E.C - Comp / AEC Sub mgr / AEC Central
* Commit any Hacks - Settings / Hacks
* Next download & install Docman ( Extensions / Install )
